Best of British: How Jersey cream and stinging nettles are making home-grown beauty products

Forget the big global cosmetic companies — the most exciting beauty products are home-grown.

Using everything from Jersey cream to marshmallow, the new crop of high-end, locally produced bath and body goodies are as patriotic as they are luxurious.

‘Affordable little luxuries can have a great mood-boosting effect in times of stress and money worries,’ says Amanda Connock, of beauty brand Connock London.

‘But I also think there’s an extra boost for people if they feel they’re supporting a British brand. Today’s consumer is also aware of ingredients and wants them as natural and as local as possible.’

So raise a flag for the best British beauty products vying for space in your bathroom cabinet . . .

DAVINA PEACE

Davina Peace

Disillusioned with green products that smelled unappealing, former advertising executive Davina Peace created her own range of luxury organic products.

Her eponymous range was launched in Harrods last December and has been flying off the shelves.

The products, approved by the Soil Association, use essential oils and Crambe maritima, a sea plant believed to be packed with anti-ageing properties.

STAR PRODUCT: Davina Peace body oil, £45.

Massage in after a hot bath and your skin will stay soft all day. Available in Harrods or davinapeace.com

Jersey Cow

JERSEY COW COMPANY

When Patrick and Bianca O’Connor moved to Jersey they made a luxurious range using local produce — honey, lavender and Jersey cream. The range launched last November and the O’Connors are extending it.

STAR PRODUCT: Refresh hand lotion with cream, lavender, geranium and lemongrass, £12.50. jerseycowcom pany.com

BEAUTY KITCHEN

Hand scrubs made with stinging nettles, body scrubs using Epsom salts and bath bombs containing bitter orange — Beauty Kitchen has cooked up a range of simple natural products at purse-friendly prices.

Created by Glaswegian Lacy MacFarlane, with a little help from Cowshed creator Richard Howard, this handmade range starts at just £5.95. Order online and the products — in recycled bottles — arrive in the post.

Connock

CONNOCK LONDON

Amanda Connock has created a beauty brand from her family’s 14th-century mill house in Dorset, using natural ingredients including kukui oil, a wonder for dry skin.

The range includes candles and soaps, but its body oil and moisturiser has the cult following.

STAR PRODUCT: Kukui Oil hydrating body lotion, £32.70. Available in Fortnum & Mason, Harrods, Harvey Nichols or connocklondon.com

GREEN & SPRING

Green & Spring

Jessica and Peter Frankopan, who started the award-winning hotel and spa Cowley Manor in the Cotswolds, have made a range of beauty products inspired by the British countryside.

Its bath, body and skincare products use British herbs and flowers including lavender, clover and marshmallow.

Launched in 2009, they include the Deep Face Scrub, £24, with horse chestnut, and the Relaxing Conditioner, £16, containing grapefruit, sweet orange and aloe vera.

STAR PRODUCT: The Restoring Face Serum, £38, containing evening primrose and carrot oils. Available at ASOS.com, Harvey Nichols and greenandspring.com

BODHI

Launched last year, Bodhi, the Indo-Aryan language Sanskrit word for ‘to awaken’, has become one of the hottest beauty brands on the market.

Bodhi

Its sleek unisex shower gels and bath oils come in seven tropically scented therapies, including Jasmine Falls, Rosemary Chi and Ylang-Ylang Incensa, which also promise spiritual enlightenment.

Whether or not that bit is true, the cocktail of coconut, fruit sugar cleansers and high concentration of essential oils leaves your skin feeling silky smooth. It’s also free from sulphates and parabens.

STAR PRODUCT: Pep noir energising bath & shower therapy is a blast of energy in a bottle. Bodhi is available to buy at bodhi.uk.com and stocked exclusively in Harvey Nichols, £22.50.
