Supermarket opening times: Shop opening hours updated as lockdown continues

Asda, Morrisons, Tesco and Aldi have updated their opening hours in response to the government extending the nationwide lockdown by another three weeks. While the strict message to stay at home carries on, the shopping rules have been relaxed slightly and new closing hours have been revealed.

Here are the new supermarket opening times from this week: 


Morrisons will be open Monday to Saturday from 7am -10pm

On Sunday, stores will be open from 9:30am – 4pm

Shops will be open exclusively for NHS staff between 6am – 7am daily (Sunday 9am – 9:30am)


Asda stores will now be open Monday – Saturday 8am – 10pm.

Normal Sunday trading hours remain the same.

NHS staff, Care Home Workers & Carers will be given priority shopping from 8am-9am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Asda will also be opening stores on Sundays an hour earlier, 9am – 10am exclusively for browsing, for key healthcare workers.


From 14 April, Aldi extended opening hours until 10pm Monday to Saturday.

Normal Sunday trading hours remain.

The busiest shopping time is late in the morning.

The quietest time to shop is from 7pm-10pm and at the beginning of the week. 

Normal Sunday opening hours remain in place.

All day everyday key workers in the NHS, Police and Fire Service will take priority ahead of queues into stores upon showing a valid ID. This includes all Social Care Workers, First Responders and St John’s Ambulance staff.


Most superstores open at 6am or 7am and close at 10pm.

Tesco Express stores will open at their usual times but will all close at 10pm.

Superstores (not including Express stores) have a special hour for the elderly and vulnerable from 9am-10am every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

NHS workers have the priority hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as a browsing hour every Sunday.


All Sainsbury’s supermarkets will be open from 08.00 to 20.00 Monday – Saturday.

Sunday trading hours remain the same.

Sainsbury’s Local opening hours remain the same.

There may be some exceptions, so it is worth checking your local store on the website.

Between 8am and 9am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, stores will be dedicated to serving elderly and disabled customers.

Between 7.30am and 8am Monday – Saturday, stores will be open to NHS and Social Care workers with a relevant pass or ID.
